Joule Compass reads a utility bill and explains what every charge on it actually is — then checks the arithmetic against the rates your utility filed with the state. Every figure it shows names the document it came from.
One line, as Joule Compass shows it
A real charge, priced from the filed tariff. That last line is the point: it is where the rate comes from, and you can go and read it.
Where a rate is not on file, or the data will not support an answer, Joule Compass says so instead of estimating. A confident wrong number about your money is worse than no number.
When our reading of the filed rates disagrees with your bill, you get what we observed, the rule it comes from, and a question you can put to your utility. We do not call it an overcharge, because we do not know that.
The document you upload is deleted once the charges have been read off it, unless you ask us to keep it. Your account number is stored as a one-way hash, never in full.
We are working through National Grid’s residential and small-commercial rates and checking the engine against real bills, to the cent, before anyone relies on it. There is no launch date to announce, and we would rather say that than invent one.
